Barry spent his entire working life in the construction business in his native Canada. Many of his projects were in remote areas of British Columbia, far from his home in the Okanagan Valley. To pass the time in the evening he took up reading as a hobby and in 1995 a friend gave him the novel “Blue Horizon” by African Author Wilbur Smith as a gift.
arry was so impressed with the authors writing style and subject matter that he eventually read every book Smith wrote (27) and became interested to visit sub-saharan Africa. In 2008 Barry sold his business and embarked upon a lengthy trip to South Africa, Botswana, Zambia and Zimbabwe. Travelling mainly by self-drive rented 4-wheel drive camper truck.
In 2010 and again in 2011 he returned to Africa to tour Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia and Tanzania. For more than 4 months each trip, travelling mainly by self-drive rented 4-wheel drive vehicle, camping in the National Parks, viewing and photographing the game and landscapes.
In November of 2011 Barry found Saadani National Park and the pristine white sand beaches north of the park. After camping a few nights along the beach near here, some local people asked if he would be interested in purchasing their family plot, which is now the site of Barry’s Beach Resort.
The buildings are built in a unique local style using local materials. The resort is a luxury hotel on a quiet, pristine, white sand beach near Sange Village, 26km North of Saadani National Park and 43km south of Pangani Town on the East Cost of Tanzania. The co-ordinates for the lodge are :5 degrees 42 minutes 2.14 seconds South, 38 degrees 53 minutes 42.47 seconds East.
The resort and surrounding beach properties are small holdings of coconut plantations, most, between 5 and 30 acres in size. Access to the resort is from the main rural road between Pangani Town and Saadani National Park. Turn east (towards the ocean) at the Sange Village sign and follow the signs to the resort.
The resort buildings are very close to the beach. All cottages have panoramic views of the Indian Ocean. The restaurant and bar has a second floor with breathtaking views of the beach, ocean and horizon, where you can enjoy a refreshing beverage, while our chefs serve up a variety of sumptuous foods and deserts to please any palate.
Our area of beach is a private secluded hideaway for your relaxation and enjoyment. Allow our friendly, courteous staff to serve you while you relax on a sun bed under a swaying coconut palm watching the dhows sails by on the sparkling blue waters of the Indian Ocean.
